Tomer (fictitious name) was born in a hospital in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. There were serious complications in labor and the doctors determined that the baby had acute neurological damage that would leave him severely retarded, deaf and blind. His parents abandoned him and never looked back.
First Hug volunteers stayed with the baby and cared for his needs for many hours every day. T was a restless baby that cried a lot (probably because of his neurological problems), and it sometimes took them a long time to calm him down.
Gradually, the love and perseverance of the volunteer "mothers" paid off and T began to relax.
A few months later, T surprised the medical team when he started responding to sound and touch, and even smiled at the volunteers.
In light of T's unexpected progress, the Authorities decided to change their original decision to move him to an institution, and instead started looking for a warm, loving foster family.
After some time they found a family experienced in caring for disabled children and T now lives with a family who provides him love, warmth and all the care he needs. First Hug volunteers changed the course of T's life, as well as the lives of many other babies and toddlers who were abandoned in hospitals.
